New This Year: Special Collections & DNA Sequencing Program

We are proud to launch a groundbreaking initiative in collaboration with the United States Forest Service—a Fungal Biodiversity Survey of the Caddo National Grasslands. This ecologically rich and heavily wooded region is home to an incredible diversity of fungal species, and we aim to voucher, catalog, and document our discoveries through our iNaturalist Project.

With over 17,000 observations contributed by 175+ community members, we’re on a mission to double that number in the coming years! Our goal for 2025 is to collect and sequence DNA from 150+ unique and unidentified fungal specimens, with many of these discoveries happening at MushFest 2025!

To help us achieve this, we’re bringing in renowned experts from across the country to guide attendees in citizen science efforts—giving you the skills to contribute meaningfully to fungal research while deepening your understanding of the natural world.

Choose Your Experience!

Can’t make it for the entire weekend? No worries! We now offer single-day passes so you can attend on the day that works best for you. But for the best value, grab a Weekend Pass and experience it all!

Keynote Lecture by Dr. Britt Bunyard
Renowned mycologist Dr. Britt Bunyard presents the keynote lecture of the evening, “You know the name. But do you REALLY know the mushroom?”

Overview: This title is borrowed from the words of the Great Gary Lincoff, whom I'll be channeling in this presentation. Gary loved fungi...we all do. We marvel over them, pursue them, try to make sense of them. And, as a result of convergent evolution, many may puzzle or confuse, as well as fascinate us upon learning their evolutionary histories. Britt Bunyard’s lecture will present fascinating stories and beautiful photos of amazing fungi featured in his latest book. Discover the crazy, wonderful life that goes on all around us, mostly hidden in plain sight. For general audiences, no knowledge of mycology is required, and all levels of mycological questions are encouraged for the Q&A. This lecture is based on features from Bunyard’s recent book, The Lives of Fungi, A Natural History of Our Planet's Decomposers.

9:00 PM – 9:30 PM

UV Foray
Bring your ultraviolet flashlights and experience the bioluminescence of fungi during the UV Foray. Armed with UV lights, venture into the night to witness mushrooms and other organisms glow in the dark!

Join renowned mycologists Dr. Amy Honan, Dr. Clark Ovrebo, David Lewis, along with NTMA President, Sebastian Tabibi, for an overview of the day’s forays and an introduction to the Special Collections/DNA Sequencing Program. In collaboration with the United States Forest Service (USFS), the North Texas Mycological Association is launching a new initiative to survey the fungal biodiversity of the Caddo National Grasslands with a goal to voucher, DNA sequence, and upload our finds to our iNaturalist Project.

We will be looking for any and all species of fungi, talking about their properties, practical usages, and ecological roles. Unique or unusual specimens will be vouchered, submitted for DNA sequencing, and subsequently stored at our fungarium for future research and study. Learn the essentials of collecting and documenting specimens for scientific research from some of the top experts in the nation!

9:30 AM – 12:00 PM

Fungal Biodiversity Survey of the Caddo National Grasslands -  Morning Forays
Venture into the Caddo National Grasslands with guides and fellow foragers as we team up to look for mushrooms and map out the biodiversity of fungi that we find inside of the Grasslands! In this special collaborative effort with the United States Forest Service, we will be recording, collecting, vouchering, and sending in specimens to be DNA sequenced and saved for future research and study. We will be splitting into groups and surveying several notable locations with incredible biodiversity within the Caddo Grasslands.
