Description:

The North Texas Mycological Association is inviting you to join NTMA Board Member and owner of Pegasus Bags, Garrett Wilkerson, as he gives a presentation on “Mycoremediation: Decontaminating the Environment with Fungi”. Mycoremediation is the act of using fungi to break down different pollutants in the environment and is also one of the newest fields of mycology. Garrett has been working with the fungus Pestalotiopsis microspora, a mushroom found in the Amazon forest which is known to be the fastest colonizer of plastic materials in the world! There are about 200 species which can colonize on plastic with P. microspora being the fastest colonizer of them all. Garrett will be discussing different biodegradables and how to spot “greenwashing”, which is when companies purposely make misleading statements about their products. The presentation will also be highlighting microbiomes for the disintegration of microplastics and how fungi can help eliminate waste and pollution.

All of our classes are hybrid presentations.
